Foundation Course in Dance and Musical Theatre
The course provides a broad base of professional training in ballet, jazz dance and musical theatre, with in-depth development of specialist skills. Ballet is the foundation of all dance and through professional guidance and training, you will become skilled and confident at auditions. Along with Jazz, these techniques will underpin all requirements needed at auditions at vocational level. Other classes will include Tap, Commercial, Body Conditioning, Voice, Drama and Singing and Musical Theatre.
- Understand and explore the fundamentals of movement
- Work on co-ordination of arms / feet / head and build core strength
- Learn essential combinations of steps and perform a selection of short fundamental choreography from steps learnt
- Understanding the complexity of different dance genres
- Learn technical exercises to improve posture, such as centering and floor exercises and travelling steps
- Reading of written texts, notations and scores
The course provides you with the opportunity to grow and develop as dancers and performing arts professionals. The programme works across the principle areas of dance practice and the associated areas of acting and voice / singing.
Course Parton
Principal – Cambridge Performing Arts Theresa Kerr has been involved in the Performing Arts industry for the last 40 years as a dancer, presenter, chorographer and teacher. Together with her late husband Patrick, she founded The Bodyworks Dance Studios in 1982
The company grew to house a thriving theatre school, a dance Foundation course ( one of the first in the UK) and Cambridge Performing Arts Course, a registered charity, offering the National Diploma in Professional Dance And Musical Theatre. Theresa began her professional training at the Anna Neagle, Fred Astaire Studios in Bond Street London and at the London Dance Centre, Covent Garden with legendary teachers Molly Molloy, Matt Mattrox And Luigi.
After the birth of her children, Theresa decided to go to University to study on a B.A. course in Art History and English. Whilst studying, Theresa began her teacher career, this was the ‘Disco Era’ and her classes took off in a big way. Introducing modern American style to dancers young and old, leading to an invitation to teach at many professional schools. Theresa taught at the Urdang Academy, West Street Schools and the renowned London Studio Centre where she taught for fourteen years. Theresa became a well known Jazz teacher and through her many contacts made the break through into choreography, alongside building up her own college together with her family. Chorography credits include TV, Fashion shows, video, working in the Far East, USA, she has worked with such stars as Dionne Warwick, Freddie Star, Kool and the Gang and many more. Continuing her electric career for the last 25 years as principle of her college, her love and passion remains with her dancers at the studio.

Voice, Acting and Drama
The course provides students with a good basis in all aspects of dramatic practice. Technical training in movement, gesture, improvisation, characterisation, stagecraft, voice, scripted and devised pieces and creative character and personality projection. The aim is to provide students with the confidence and skills to go forward into the profession.
Students may not have had much experience of finding and working on monologues. The course fills that gap and provides the expertise to guide the student to find what suits them individually. The course is prescriptive and student based and, as such, changes according to the students needs.
Singing
The singing lessons on the MT course focus largely on preparing students for dance and drama school auditions, finding songs that suit the students range and playing type. A technical class also works on developing vocal skills such as breath support, diction, placement and range. These classes give students the necessary skills to audition for higher education courses and ultimately work in the performing arts.
